Divers in Barbados will have a representative body when the Barbados Free Diving Association is launched next week Friday, September 28, at the National Aquatic Center in Wildey, St Michael.

It is a non-profit association that will seek to represent the interest of divers across the island and the man behind it all Alex Davis said next week's opening will be entertaining and competitive when they host the first ever 'Hold Your Breath' challenge.

“We will be briefing everyone on what we plan to do with the association, where we want to move in the future and what it means for Barbados in the long run,” Davis said as he explained the long-term plan for the association.

“One of the long-term plans for the association is so we could host an international pool competition which will attract athletes from other Caribbean islands to come and compete and represent their own country. And this will be a pool free diving competition that will be hosted next year. The date hasn't been confirmed, but it will probably be in the first half of the year. We also want to create a bit of community here on the island. And it will be open to anyone who likes free diving, spearfishing, snorkeling, or anything like that,” said Davis who encouraged the public to come out and participate in the opening.

The experienced diver said: “We are just going to do a little meet and greet, and there is going to be a little mini-game going, raffle going on with over a thousand dollars in prizes. The breath hold game is going to start at seven o'clock, so once you are there before seven and sign in, you can then take part.”

T-shirts will be on sale at the aquatic center and proceeds will go towards the association.
